Automotive Seat Belts

The general category for seat belts fitted to cars and light vehicles. If you know a seat belt is needed but not yet which type, this is the right starting point.

Overview

One name, several different products underneath it

"Automotive seat belt" is how most enquiries begin, and it covers a genuinely wide range. Underneath the name sit three-point belts, lap belts, retractable assemblies and the buckle side of the system — each a different product with its own considerations.

Cars and light vehicles vary in how the belt is anchored and how much of the assembly is carried by the seat rather than the body of the vehicle. That is why a belt from one vehicle rarely transfers cleanly to another, even when the two look similar from the inside.

Starting here is fine. Once we know the vehicle and which seat is involved, the enquiry usually resolves into one of the more specific categories within a message or two.

Typical applications

  • Passenger cars
  • Hatchbacks
  • Sedans
  • SUVs and crossovers
  • Light commercial vehicles
  • Replacement requirements

Applications listed are typical examples. Suitability for any specific vehicle should be confirmed before fitting.

Selection considerations

What narrows an automotive seat belt enquiry

  1. Which seat, exactlyDriver, front passenger, rear outboard or rear centre — the assembly differs between them even in the same vehicle.
  2. Three-point or lapWhether the belt crosses the chest as well as the hips is the first fork in the road.
  3. Does it retractA belt that spools back into a housing needs a retractor; a fixed-length belt does not.
  4. What has actually failedWebbing, latch plate, buckle receiver or retractor. Naming the part avoids replacing the whole assembly unnecessarily.
  5. Model yearVehicles sharing a model name can differ across model years, including in how the belt is mounted.

Before you enquire

Information worth having ready

The more of this you can supply, the more precise the answer — and the fewer rounds of questions it takes to get there.

01

Vehicle identity

Make, model, model year and body type. A registration or VIN, if you have it to hand, removes most ambiguity.

02

Seating position

Front or rear, driver or passenger side, outboard or centre. Say which seat the belt serves.

03

Photographs

The existing assembly, its mounting points and any markings on the parts. This is the single most useful thing you can send.

04

Quantity

One seat, a full vehicle set, or a repeat requirement across several vehicles.
